Detox with Reflexology

springreflex.jpg

In the slower, colder, winter months, our bodies tend to store more toxins since our detoxification organs are impacted by inactivity. Spring is the season of reawakening and a perfect time to kick start your detoxification system.

A Spring Detox Reflexology Session focuses on your lymphatic system, kidney, lungs, liver and colon and will jump start your detoxification system, starting you on your way to an internal spring cleaning.

But how does Reflexology, a therapy working on the feet, detoxify the whole body? It's all about the blood flow.

-With over 7,000 nerve endings per foot, Reflexology deeply relaxes our bodies - allowing the blood vessels to dilate, promoting increased blood flow to the whole body. With increased blood flow, the detoxing organs and the lymphatic system are able to function at their peak.

-When the body is in a state of stress, the blood flow is sent to key areas of the body, diverting it away from other areas such as the intestines and gut. While this hardwired body response was intended for short duration, many people are now experiencing a chronic level of stress to some degree. As a result, detoxification is not priority, so these organs are given less blood flow and cannot perform optimally. In a Reflexology session, the cleaning organs and lymphatic system are flushed with the proper amount of blood flow and can perform the job nature intended.

-Each 'relex area' on the foot is a system of nerve endings that correspond to an organ, gland or part of the muscuolskeletal system. Reflexology studies (using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging technology) have shown that when a reflex area is worked, there is increased blood flow in the region of the brain related to the body part the reflex corresponds to. With our Spring Detox, we will focus on your detoxification system (lymphatic system, lungs, kidneys, liver and colon) to bring more blood flow to these organs and jump start your internal cleanse.

We invite you to shake off winter, jump start your detoxification system and see how incredible you feel with a Spring Detox with Reflexology.

Reflexology for Fibromyalgia

Written by: Charlene Shea, Reflexologist

As we all know, self-care is so important in this day and age as we are exposed to so many things that are detrimental to our health and well being. Whether it be our compromised food, environmental elements, or stress, we are forced to counteract the negative effects by committing to a healthy lifestyle. Often times this includes a regular practice of different healing modalities to maintain homeostasis in the body.

Reflexology is gaining recognition as one of the more profound ways to help balance the body. By working the reflex points in the hands and feet, a Reflexologist is able to stimulate different organs, glands and musculoskeletal parts of the body. It is truly like an internal massage.

For those suffering from Fibromyalgia, Reflexology has been a sought after and incredibly beneficial treatment for a variety of reasons. Below are five ways that Reflexology can benefit those suffering from Fibromyalgia:

  1. Relieves ‘Nerve Pain’ by calming down specific nerve endings.

  2. Helps Fight Fatigue by stimulating your pancreas and adrenal glands.

  3. Helps Digestion by stimulating your stomach and digestive organs.

  4. Promote Better Sleep by stimulating your pineal gland and triggering your parasympathetic nervous system.

  5. Improves Circulation by working the heart reflex and increasing lymphatic movement.

At Therapeutic Bodywork each Reflexology session begins with a warm foot bath and takes place in a Zero Gravity Chair, with a heated Biomat beneath you. We also offer a CBD Enhanced Reflexology session to help combat pain and inflammation in the body.

For a limited time, we are offering a complimentary upgrade to a CBD Reflexology session with Charlene.

Reflexology Can Really Get On Your Nerves

Reflexology can really get on your nerves. The nerves in your feet, that is!

Over 7,000 nerve endings in each foot are worked during a reflexology session which translates into a session rich in communication with your nervous system.

Consider these facts:

  • The feet have more nerves per square inch than any other part of the body.

  • Reflexology stimulates neural pathways.  We’ve all heard the saying “use it, or lose it” and this applies to neural pathways, as well.  The more electrical impulses that travel along a pathway, the stronger that pathway becomes.

  • Because we wear shoes most of the time, the nerve endings on the bottom of our feet go under-stimulated.  Working the feet helps stimulate the nerves so that the pathways remain open to provide key information to the brain about the position of joints, muscle tension and speed of movement.  This, in turn, helps us maintain good balance and proper body alignment.

  • Research shows that the vagus nerve (the body’s major parasympathetic nerve) is directly affected during a reflexology session thereby slowing heart rate, facilitating digestion, and promoting relaxation.

  • Reflexology’s stimulation of the nerve endings in the feet creates activity in the “default mode network” part of the brain helping us adapt to a changing environment and process emotionally relevant information.

  • Dr. Manzanares, a medical doctor who practices reflexology in Spain, found that the “congested” areas in the reflexes on the feet are an excess of tangled nerve fibers.  Working these entanglements with special reflexology techniques helps break the biochemical link for inflammation and pain.

Treat Your Feet

If someone told you they drove their cars 115,000 miles without a single oil change or any maintenance, you'd think they were crazy to not take better care of such a valuable possession. Yet, that's how most of us approach caring for our feet during our lifetimes. Consider these facts:

  • The average person walks 115,000 miles over a lifetime.  That’s the equivalent of traveling the circumference of the earth 4x!

  • 25% of all the bones in the human body are in the feet.  When these bones are out of alignment, so is the rest of the body.

  • The soles of the feet contain more sweat glands and sensory nerve endings per square centimeter than any other part of the body.

  • 3 out of 4 Americans experience foot problems in their lifetime, and yet, only a small percentage are born with foot problems. It is neglect and ill-fitting shoes that bring on problems.

  • Since your feet are the furthest point from the heart, circulation to the feet is much more work for the circulatory system and stagnation within the body can quickly impact our feet negatively

Reflexology increases circulation in the feet and eases contractions of the foot’s muscles, ligaments and vessels.  This helps the feet to regain proper alignment and to be infused with nourishing blood flow so that they can stand strong in their job to support the whole body. Show your feet some love and book a Reflexology session.
